Abstract
У статті систематизовано правові аспекти розв’язання спору про спадкування престолу Шотландії у 1290–1292 роках («великої справи») як прикладу розв’язання за участю іноземного монарха спору в епоху європейського Середньовіччя; визначено його правове значення для подальших англо-шотландських відносин. Король Англії Едвард I, який узяв участь у розв’язанні цього спору, використав його для встановлення своїх прав сюзерена щодо Шотландії та згодом – для позбавлення шотландського королівства незалежності (яку, однак, згодом було поновлено). The article systemizes the legal aspects of the settlement of the dispute on the inheritance of the throne of Scotland in 1290–1292 (the ‘Great Cause’) as an example of the settlement with the participation of a foreign monarch of a dispute in the epoch of the European Middle Ages; its meaning for the relations between England and Scotland that followed is defined. King of England Edward I, who took part in settling this dispute, used it to establish his rights of the overlord as to Scotland and later on to deprive the Scottish kingdom of its independence (though restored later on).
