Норми міжнародного гуманітарного права спрямовані на захист прав військовополонених, визначення їх статусу. За весь час існування людства міжнародне співтовариство розробило та погодило норми міжнародного гуманітарного права і сформувало основні принципи ведення війни. Один з найістотніших серед них – це принцип захисту жертв війни, що виражається у забезпеченні воюючими сторонами правового захисту військовополонених. Для забезпечення збереження життя і здоров’я осіб, свобода яких обмежена у зв’язку із збройними конфліктами, норми міжнародного права визначають низку мінімальних стандартів утримання таких осіб. The article deals with topical issues of securing the legal guarantees of the status of prisoners of war in international law and their support. The norms of international humanitarian law are aimed at protecting the rights of prisoners of war, determining their status. Throughout the existence of mankind, the international community has developed and agreed upon the rules of international humanitarian law and formed the basic principles of warfare. One of the most significant of these is the principle of protection for the victims of war, which is expressed by the warring parties providing legal protection to prisoners of war.
